September 30, 1887 The Yellow River burst
On this day, 138 years ago, on September 30, 1887 (August 14, 1887 in the lunar calendar), the Yellow River burst. On September 30, 1887, the Yellow River burst its mouth at Shibao in Xiaxun, Zhengzhou. It was more than 300 zhang at the beginning and reached more than 300 zhang in three days. It seized and flowed south into the Jialu River, and then merged eastward with the Wo River, flowed south into Zhoujiakou, and entered the Huaihe River. The entire river continued to flow, causing serious disaster. Due to the political corruption of the Qing government, water conservancy was not prosperous for a long time, and river management was poor. In 1887, except for the North Canal burst hundreds of feet in Pingding (Shantong) in Tongzhou, and the Yongding River burst in Nanqigong (Dong 'an Territory), Lugou Bridge, Zhili Wuqing, Bazhou and other places, the Yellow River burst in Kaizhou since July 21, but it did not attract the attention of the rulers. After the Yellow River burst in Zhengzhou on September 30, the ruler's first consideration was not to quickly block it, but to break the Yellow River violently, lest bandits would cause trouble. He ordered Zeng Guoquan and Yulu to return to their posts as governors of Liangjiang and Huguang respectively to guard against it. Then on October 15, the court issued 100,000 taels of treasury silver to relieve the disaster. As for the expenses for river works and disaster relief in Zhengzhou, on the 16th, the Ministry of Revenue was ordered to make pre-financing and prepare to collect additional taxes on foreign medicine (opium) from various provinces. It was not until November 9 that the court ordered Li Hongzao, Minister of Rites, to Zhengzhou to inspect the emergency repair situation of river works. On November 13, the Qing government issued a donation case for Zhengzhou river workers. Due to the lack of solid repair work for the breach, the river worker was washed away by water again on June 30 of the following year. It was not until January 20, 1889 that the river mouth was closed.
