On this day, 71 years ago, September 3, 1954 (August 7, 1954 in the lunar calendar), the second Taiwan Strait crisis occurred: the Jiusan Artillery Battle. The Taiwan Strait Crisis, referred to as the "Taiwan Strait Crisis", refers to the military actions taken by the military on both sides of the Taiwan Strait against each other after the Kuomintang regime defeated Taiwan in 1949, which may trigger a full-scale war. It has so far experienced six times. On September 3, 1954, the China People's Liberation Army launched a howitzer assault on the Kuomintang troops stationed in Kinmen. Battle of Jiangshan Island On January 18, 1955, the troops of the East China Military Region of the People's Liberation Army were under the unified command of Zhang Aiping, Chief of Staff of the Military Region. This was the first coordinated operation of the PLA's army, navy and air force. By 5:30 pm that day, after a day of fighting, the People's Liberation Army occupied the island. General Wang Shengming, the commander of the National Army's Yijiangshan, shot a grenade and committed suicide. Dachen Island Retreats From February 8 to February 11 of the same year, the U.S. Navy and the Kuomintang Navy evacuated Dachen military and civilians by ship to Taiwan.
