On the 7th of last month, the Japanese base camp issued a combat order in Xuzhou: it decided to concentrate a total of 300,000 troops from North and Central China to attack Xuzhou. In order to prevent the Japanese army from marching straight into Wuhan, Li Zongren, commander of the Fifth Theater Area, decided to resist in Xuzhou. He successively transferred more than 200,000 troops, together with the original troops, totaling about 600,000 people, all of whom were put on the front line of the battle. He divided his troops to guard the line starting from Weishan Lake in the west, passing through Yi County, Lanling, Xiangcheng, and Tancheng in the east, covering a length of more than 300 miles. Due to the dispersion of troops, the battle fell into a passive situation from the beginning. In early May, the Japanese army's northern and southern wings penetrated and circuitously from the two wings of Xuzhou, cutting off the retreat of China defenders, causing the China army to immediately fall into extreme chaos. Hundreds of thousands of troops quickly collapsed. To the north of Xuzhou, the Japanese Army's 14th Division crossed the Yellow River from the south of Pucheng and captured Heze and Yuncheng. In mid-May, it entered the east side of Lanfeng and cut off the Longhai Road; in the south of Xuzhou, the Japanese Army's 101st Division set out from Dongtai in northern Jiangsu Province and marched north along the canal. In early May, it captured Funing, coordinating the enemy on the northern line to move south: The Japanese Sixth Division entered near Hefei to contain the China garrison forces; The 3rd, 9th and 13th Divisions of the Japanese army, with the cooperation of armored forces and the Air Force, invaded north along the west side of Jinpu Road. On May 18, they successively captured Suzhou County and Xiao County, and one of them entered Huangkou Station on Longhai Road. At this point, the Japanese army formed a siege of Xuzhou on all sides, and the China garrison was forced to retreat step by step. In order to prevent being annihilated by the Japanese army, on May 15, the main force of the fifth theater area was ordered to break through southwest and retreat to western Anhui and southern Henan, leaving only a small number of troops to use the villages in northern Jiangsu and western Shandong to deal with the Japanese army to delay its attack on the Longhai Railway. On the 19th, Xuzhou fell. The Japanese army blew up the railway bridge on the Longhai Line and cut off the retreat of China troops. The Japanese armored vehicles drove into Xuzhou. After the Japanese army occupied Xuzhou, they raised their glasses to celebrate the victory. The Japanese army broke through Xuzhou. After the China defenders abandoned Xuzhou, broke out, and moved to southern Henan and northern Hubei.
