Ren Zhongmin was born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1897. In 1918, he was admitted to the Department of China Literature of Peking University. He learned Song Ci and Jin and Yuan Sanqu from Professor Wu Mei, a master of poetry. After graduating from college, he went to Suzhou to study poetry under Wu's family and read all the rare books collected by Wu's family. After the 1930s, he served as a professor at Guangdong University (now Sun Yat-sen University), Shanghai University, Fudan University, Sichuan University, and Yangzhou Normal University.
