Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On December 3, 1998, humans crossed the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon on foot for the first time
On this day, 27 years ago, on December 3, 1998 (October 15, 1998 in the lunar calendar), humans walked through the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon for the first time. Team members bravely crossed the rapids. At 12 a.m. on December 3, 1998, Guan Zhihua, captain of the second team of the scientific expedition expedition team crossing the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon on foot, and Gao Dengyi, captain who was waiting at the village entrance of Zhaqu Village, the base camp, hugged tightly. Team 1 arrived in Zhaqu yesterday. At this point, the first scientific expedition by humans on foot across the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon came to a successful conclusion. The scientific expedition team set off in Beijing on October 19. On October 29, two teams officially set off from Pai Township, Nyingchi area, Xizang. It lasted 34 days and traveled more than 600 kilometers. It traveled more than 250 kilometers from Niding Village, Pai Township, at the entrance of the Grand Canyon to Xirang Village, Beibeng Township. These more than 250 kilometers of canyons include the most rapid and most stage of the Yarlung Zangbo River. Under the squeeze of two Nanggabawa Peak and Galabailei Peak with an altitude of more than 7000 meters, the Yajiang River twists and turns in more than 80 places. Therefore, the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon is also known as the Grand Bend Canyon. Yajiang entered the canyon from Niding Village, Pai Township, at an altitude of more than 3000 meters. After that, it plunged hundreds of miles to Xirang Village, where it fell to an altitude of more than 500 meters, with a drop of more than 2400 meters. In the Grand Canyon, dense virgin forests and a wide variety of animals and plants are still preserved. The Japanese call this "the last secret realm of mankind." In recent years, this secret realm has become an international hotspot. Expeditions from all over the world have entered it year after year, but no one has completed the entire journey. During this crossing inspection, the China scientific research team set out from Niding Village, Pai Township, down the river, and walked to Gara, the last village before entering the no man's land of the Grand Canyon in two days. The next 30 days were spent in no man's land. It is less than 40 kilometers from Gara to Zaqu, the base camp, and the progress of about one kilometer along the river every day shows the hardships the team members have put in. Continuously climbing mountains and wading in the jungle, the physical strength required for each kilometer crossing is equivalent to walking 20 kilometers. Just one week before arriving in Zaqu, a team member was bitten by a cow louse and had to withdraw from the journey and was sent out for treatment. The second team set out from Pai Township, crossed the Duoxiongla Mountain at an altitude of more than 4200 meters, and entered Beibeng Township in the lower reaches of the Grand Canyon. It went up the Yajiang River and walked more than 400 kilometers, including 60 kilometers of no man's land. After experiencing hardships, the same team finally joined forces on this day. At this point, China can finally proudly announce the birth of a new human record. Through this crossing, the China unveiled the mystery of "the last secret realm of mankind." After investigation, we not only grasped the distribution of animals and plants in the Grand Canyon area and the water and gas resources of the Yajiang River, but also obtained a large number of gratifying discoveries. Between Pai and Zhaqu in Yajiang, three mainstream waterfalls with drops of more than 30 meters were discovered; a large number of rare tree species of yew were found in no man's land, with the largest trunk diameter of more than 1 meter and height of more than 20 meters. It is particularly worth mentioning that during the crossing, scientists found a large number of rare insect specimens. The discovery of these tree species and insects once again confirmed that this area is one of the few areas in the world with the most intact pristine environment. To commemorate the crossing, the scientific expedition team set up a monument at the head of Zhaqu Village and held a monument unveiling ceremony that afternoon.
