On this day, 87 years ago, on October 24, 1938 (September 2, 1938, the "Zhongshan Ship" was salvaged 50 years after it was sunk by Japanese aircraft. On October 24, 1938, the "Zhongshan Ship" was sunk by Japanese aircraft while patrolling the river area of Chiji Mountain in Jinkou, Wuchang. The "Zhongshan Ship" was sunk in the Zhuankou waters of Pier 3, 26 kilometers away from Hankou. The bow of the ship was facing Hankou, and the ship's body was lying on the reef plate at an 85-degree angle to the left. The distance between the ship's head and tail was 19 meters and 16 meters respectively. The "Zhongshan Ship", formerly known as the "Yongfeng Ship", was ordered at the Mitsubishi Shipyard in Japan in August of the second year of Xuantong of the Qing Dynasty (1910). The cost was 680,000 yen. After being created in the second year of the Republic of China (1913), it was accepted by the Navy Department of the Yuan Shikai government and incorporated into the First Navy Fleet. The Zhongshan Ship has extremely special historical value in our country's modern history and is a precious historical and cultural heritage of the Chinese nation and the people of the world. The Zhongshan Ship was originally named Yongfeng Ship. On April 13, 1925, in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, it was officially named the Zhongshan Ship. On October 24, 1938, while participating in the anti-Japanese battle in Wuhan, the Zhongshan ship was unfortunately blown up and sunk by Japanese aircraft. During his 25 years of service, he has experienced four major historical events: the Law Enforcement Movement, Sun Yat-sen's Guangzhou disaster, the Zhongshan Ship Incident, and the Wuhan Defense War. It not only records Dr. Sun Yat-sen's bumpy journey of suffering and determination to save the country, but also records Dr. Sun Yat-sen's achievements as a pioneer of China's democratic revolution. It also embodies the great patriotic spirit of the Chinese nation that did not fear violence, resisted aggression, and devoted its heroic life. On May 3, 1988, the salvage work of the "Zhongshan Ship" began. Divers had taken out voltage regulators, artillery shells, steel plates, copper fasteners, railings and steel ropes, as well as charred ship plates and other objects from the ship. By about 10 a.m. on January 28, 1997, the famous ship of a generation, the Zhongshan Ship, slowly surfaced in the Yangtze River waters near Jinkou Town, Wuhan, Hubei Province. At this point, the overall salvage work of the Zhongshan ship has been successfully completed. The salvage work of the Zhongshan ship has always received the attention and support of compatriots at home and abroad. In 1988, Hubei Province began preparations for salvage. At the end of 1996, Hubei Province established a salvage work leading group headed by Li Daqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Executive Vice Governor. On November 12, 1996, the 130th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's birth, salvage work officially began. The Chongqing Yangtze River Rescue and Salvage Company was responsible for this salvage task. In order to ensure that the salvage work was foolproof, it sent more than 70 divers to dive nearly 100 times for inspection and measurement, and formulated the "double barge lifting" method for salvage. After the Zhongshan ship emerged from the water, it was moved to the Hubei shipyard 18 kilometers downstream, and scientific methods were used to carry out comprehensive repairs in accordance with the principle of "keeping the old as old". At the same time, 3000 acres of land are planned in Jinkou, Wuchang, where the Zhongshan Ship sank, to build a comprehensive Zhongshan Ship display base, making it a large-scale patriotic education base. Restoration work officially started on November 12, 1999.
