December 13, 1797 The birth of German poet Heine
228 years ago today, December 13, 1797 (October 26, 1797 in the lunar calendar), the German poet Heine was born. Heinrich Heine, the German poet Heine, was born on December 13, 1797 in Dusseldorf to a Jewish merchant family. After graduating from high school, his parents asked him to do business; in 1816, he went to work in his uncle's bank in Hamburg and fell in love with his cousin. Since then, Heine began to write lyrical poems. In autumn 1819, Heine entered the University of Bonn to study law with his uncle's consent. He attended O.W. Schlegel's German language history courses and often interacted with him, so he was influenced by the Romantics. Later, Heine joined the University of Göttingen and the University of Berlin to study, listened to Hegel's philosophy courses, and attended a literary salon in Berlin. In 1825, he was baptized by Christianity and received a doctorate in law that same year. Between 1821 and 1830, Heine traveled throughout Germany and Poland, England, and Italy. In 1822, his first book,"Poetry of Songs", was published in Berlin, and the following year,"Tragedy-Lyrical Interlude" was published. In 1827, he put together early lyrical poems and published them in Hamburg titled "Songs Collection", which caused a sensation and established his position in the literary world. During this period, he wrote a series of prose travel notes, such as "Travels on Harz Hill","Ideas-Collection of Le Grand","Journey from Munich to Genoa" and "Lucca Baths". These works were published in Volumes 1, 2 and 3 of "Travel" respectively, which also aroused great repercussions. Most of Heine's lyrical poems and travel notes during this period describe his personal experiences, feelings and longing. His feelings are sincere, his language is beautiful, and they have obvious romantic colors. Many of his lyrical poems were composed into music and were widely circulated. In 1830, the "July Revolution" broke out in France. Heine was deeply inspired and decided to go to Paris. In May 1831, he arrived in Paris, where he met writers such as Dumas, Bellange, George Sang, Balzac, Hugo, and musicians such as Liszt and Chopin, and interacted with utopians. At this time, he successively published "The State of France"(1833) in the "Daily Journal" in Augsburg; he wrote articles introducing Germany for French newspapers, which were later expanded into two monographs,"On the History of Religion and Philosophy in Germany"(1835) and "On the Romanticism"(1836). Heine's work was banned by the German Federal Parliament in 1835. Exiled writer Bernard published the "Paris Letter", denying traditional German culture and attacking Heine; the two had a dispute. Heine wrote "Ludwig Berner, A Memorandum", which was published in 1840 after Berner's death. In order to combat the empty "tendency poems" of radical poets, he wrote the long poem "Atta Troll, A Midsummer Night's Dream"(1843). At the end of 1843, Heine met Marx, which brought his poetry creation to a new peak. During this period, he published "Collection of New Poems"(1844), which included a part of political poems named after "Poetry of the Times" and a long poem "Germany, A Winter's Fairy Tales"(1844). These poems achieved high achievements in both ideological content and artistic skills, and became the strongest voice of the era on the eve of the Revolution in 1848. In the same year, the revolution failed and Heine's health became worse and worse. However, despite the pain of paralysis, he still wrote many excellent poems by dictation, including "Romanello"(1851),"Poetry Collection from 1853 to 1854" and some surviving poems. Although there are grief and sorrow in these poems, most of them are still full of fighting passion, expressing his firm confidence in the future of his motherland and mankind. Heine died in Paris on February 17, 1856.
