Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The working draft of the human genome was unveiled on June 26, 2000
On June 26, 2000 (May 25, 2000, the working draft of the human genome was unveiled. On June 26, 2000, a working draft of the human genome was completed and released to the world. Professor Yang Huanming, China contact person of the Human Genome Project International Organization and Professor of the Institute of Genetics, China Academy of Sciences, said that the basic deciphering of the human genome genetic code shows that mankind's understanding of itself has entered a new stage. It is reported that the quality and quantity of the "working framework map" greatly exceeded expectations. Not only did it cover 97% of the genome, but 85% of the genome sequence has been assembled. This provides data for studying the polymorphism of human genetic material. It is worth mentioning that more than 50% of the sequences are close to the completion map standard, and 20% of the sequences have reached the completion map standard. Thousands of genes have been identified and dozens of disease-causing genes have been mapped. Scientists believe that this lays the foundation for completing all sequencing work by June 2001. The human genome contains about 60,000 to 100,000 genes, consisting of about 3 billion base pairs, distributed in 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus. In order to decipher this "heavenly book" that contains the secrets of life and determines people's birth, age, illness and death, in 1990, the International Human Genome Project, known as the "Moon Landing Project" of life, was launched, mainly by the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain and other countries. Scientists participate together. In September 1999, my country actively joined this research plan and was responsible for determining 1% of the entire human genome sequence, that is, 30 million base pairs on chromosome 3. As a result, my country became the only developing country to participate in this research plan. Since then, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, scientists from Beijing, Shanghai and other places have joined forces to launch a sprint towards this peak in life sciences. In just half a year, our scientists basically completed the task of sequencing the human genome and deciphered part of the genetic code of human chromosome 3. This marks our country's contribution to international human genome research and also proves that our scientists have the ability to play an active role in major international cooperation. Decoding the human genetic code is not only considered to be the most significant event in biology since Darwin's time, but also considered to be the most important scientific research project in human history. It is envisaged that after base pair sequencing is completed, scientists will analyze how base pairs make up genes and what functions various genes have. Understanding the location, structure and function of all genes will pave the way for humans to conquer a variety of difficult diseases. It is reported that 60% of the sequences in the working framework diagram were measured in the last six months. During this period, our scientists, together with their international counterparts, measured 1000 bases per second, working hard 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to draw a blueprint for human life. The basic data of the human genetic code decoded by the "Human Genome Project" has been made available to researchers around the world for free.
