August 30, 1982 The Soviet Union launched a nuclear-powered ocean surveillance satellite
On this day, 43 years ago, on August 30, 1982 (July 12, 1982 in the lunar calendar), the Soviet Union launched a nuclear-powered ocean surveillance satellite. On August 30, 1982, the Soviet Union launched the Cosmos 1402 nuclear-powered ocean surveillance satellite, which, together with the Cosmos 1412 launched on October 2 of the same year, formed a dual-base-station radar satellite flying in pairs on the same orbital plane. The radar system's transmitter and receiver are mounted on the two satellites, with the purpose of reducing ground clutter and making it easier to detect smaller ship targets. The satellite can perform all-weather reconnaissance. It consists of three parts: (1) a module consisting of the upper stage rocket shell and on-board electronic equipment;(2) a large aperture surveillance radar module; and (3) a nuclear energy section that supplies power to on-board radar and radio equipment.
