On November 18, 1901, Britain agreed to hand over the canal rights to the United States
124 years ago today, on November 18, 1901 (October 8, 1901 in the lunar calendar), the United Kingdom agreed to hand over the right to the canal to the United States. On November 18, 1901, the United States and the United States signed the Second Hyjohn-Ponsford Treaty, and the United Kingdom agreed to the United States 'right to build and manage canals in Central America. However, the treaty stipulates that the canal must remain neutral and must be open to ships from both countries under equal conditions. If the U.S. Senate had not proposed an amendment to the first Hayjohn-Ponsford Treaty, the United States would have received most of the rights mentioned in the treaty. In 899, Secretary of State John Haye and British Ambassador Lord Ponsford reached the first treaty on the rules of the Suez Canal. The most important clause of the first treaty was that the canal area should not be fortified. The U.S. Senate insisted on fortifying canals in Central America, so it proposed an amendment to the treaty. Britain refused to accept the revised treaty. The treaty signed on that day did not explicitly prohibit the establishment of military facilities along the canal.
