On this day, 28 years ago, September 8, 1997 (August 7, 1997 in the lunar calendar), the Haiti ferry was severely overloaded, causing a major shipwreck. On September 8, 1997, a ferry in the Caribbean island country of Haiti crashed and sank in the sea northwest of the capital Port-au-Prince. Most of the 804 passengers were missing, and only 60 were rescued and survived. The ferry had just been put into operation for 10 days, and the cause of the crash was severe overload. After the shipwreck, the Haiti government immediately launched emergency rescue work. As of press time, in addition to 60 survivors, rescuers had found the bodies of 49 victims.
