Xuan also killed Tan Sitong, Lin Xu, Yang Rui, Yang Shenxiu, Liu Guangdi, and Kang Guangren (known in history as the "Six Gentlemen of 1898"), wanted Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, dismissed dozens of reformist officials including Chen Baozhen, Jiang Biao, and Huang Zunxian, and abolished all the New Deal. The Reform Movement of 1898 failed.
