After selecting the United States, the United Nations established a site selection committee to inspect several cities that could be considered in the second half of 1946, such as Philadelphia, Boston and San Francisco. Although the priority locations were several locations north of New York City, the site selection committee did not conduct a serious study of crowded Manhattan at the time. At the last moment of deciding on the site selection, Rockefeller Jr. volunteered to donate US$8.5 million to the United Nations to purchase land for the United Nations headquarters.
