"The Slaughterhouse", published in 1906, is Upton-Sinclair's sixth novel and the most successful of the 80 books he wrote in his life. The plot of the book was conceived when he was investigating livestock enclosures for a socialist-leaning weekly newspaper in Chicago. The novel tells the story of the suffering of a Lithuania immigrant family while working as a hired employee in a livestock pen. The publication of this book also led to the formulation of a meat food processing inspection method. After the manuscript was rejected by several publishers, Sinclair published the book himself. It immediately became a bestseller. A series of novels on other themes followed, including "Oil"(1927), based on a scandal about U.S. oil reserves, and "Boston"(1928), based on the cases of two radicals, Sacho and Vanziti, who were executed on charges of robbery and murder. However, in the 1980s, it was ruled by the U.S. Supreme Court that it was an unfounded wrong judgment.
