In 1922, he received a master's degree from Colombia University and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Washington in 1925. After returning to China, he served as professor of psychology at Southeast University and Daxia University, director of the Department of Education at Central University, dean of the School of Education, and dean of the Normal College. In 1933, he was hired as the first ministerial professor of the Ministry of Education. In 1938, he served as director of the Normal Research Department of Central University and director of the Educational Psychology Department of the Research Institute of Central University. He founded the Institute of Educational Psychology and served as director. He recruited graduate students and awarded a master's degree in educational psychology for the first time in China. In 1946, he attended the International Conference on New Education in Australia and gave lectures. Research on Chinese characters began in 1923, and the book "Chinese Character Problems" was written with the results of 25 years of research. It put forward the factors that affect the learning of Chinese characters, six principles for organizing Chinese characters, and principles for selecting Chinese characters in editing textbooks. It is of great theoretical and practical value to improve the learning of Chinese characters. He used rigorous testing methods and statistical methods in his research, supplemented by experiments and observations. In 1934, Wanqing Experimental School was established in Nanjing to engage in experimental research on educational psychology, use intelligence tests to select outstanding children, teach students in accordance with their aptitude, and achieve results. Since 1925, after 30 years of hard work, tests for various subjects in primary and secondary schools, ability tests and intelligence tests for primary and secondary schools have been compiled. This is the beginning of the compilation of such tests in China, such as 8 types of middle school literary and white comprehension scales and Chinese characters tests, 9 types of arithmetic application questions and plane geometry tests, 4 types of middle school and college English tests, and 9 types of junior high school common sense tests.
