On June 20, 1898, the British captured Guam in the Spanish-American War
On this day, 127 years ago, June 20, 1898 (May 2, 1898 in the lunar calendar), Britain captured Guam during the Spanish-American War. In 1898, the United States launched a war with Spain over Cuba. In February 1898, American newspapers used the disclosure of personal letters insulting U.S. President McKinley by the Spanish minister to the United States to incite anti-Spanish sentiment. On the 15th, the U.S. warship "Maine" was suddenly blown up and sunk in Havana, causing excitement. The United States used this as an excuse to declare war on West on April 25. In May, the U.S. fleet in the Far East destroyed the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay in the Philippines; it also relied on the cooperation of local ethnic independent armed forces to occupy Manila. The US Army landed in Cuba in June. The United States also seized the Hawaiian Islands and Puerto Rico from Spain. On June 20, 1898, Spain ceded Guam to the United States as compensation for the war.
