On this day, 490 years ago, on July 6, 1535 (June 7, 1535 lunar calendar), Thomas More, the founder of the early European utopian socialist theory, died. Thomas More (St. Thomas More, also known as SirThomas More, February 7, 1478 - July 6, 1535) was an English utopian socialist, saint and author of Utopia. Born in 1478 to a law family in London, Moore graduated from Oxford University. He was a lawyer, member of parliament, deputy chancellor of the exchequer, speaker of the House of Commons, and judge. He was executed in 1535 for opposing Henry VIII as head of the church. In 1935, four hundred years after his death, he was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XI of the Roman Catholic Church, and in 1980 he was honored by John Paul II, along with Bishop Fisher, as a martyr for the protection of God. On July 6th, the day of his martyrdom will be remembered by all Catholics. Ranked 37th in the list of the 100 greatest celebrities in British history.
