On June 14, 2004 (April 27, 2004 in the lunar calendar), the first World Blood Donor Day. World Blood Donor Day is observed on June 14 every year. To encourage more people to donate blood for free and to publicize and promote the implementation of global blood safety programs, the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations, and the International Blood Transfusion Association designated June 14, 2004 as the first World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). Historical Sources World Blood Donor Day was chosen because June 14 is the birthday of Carl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize winner who discovered the ABO blood group system. The theme of the first "World Blood Donor Day" is "Donate blood, give the gift of life. Thank you." The purpose of this special day is to thank those voluntary unpaid blood donors who have saved millions of lives, especially individuals who have donated blood regularly on multiple occasions, and to celebrate their selfless dedication of donating blood without compensation; At the same time, it is hoped that the whole society will raise wider awareness of the importance of voluntary unpaid blood donation, and encourage more people, especially young people, to become qualified regular blood donors, providing the safest blood available when needed to save lives. On May 24, 2005, at the 58th World Health Assembly, 192 World Health Organization member states passed a resolution to recognize "World Blood Donor Day" as an international commemoration day. Each year, a theme and a city are selected by the relevant organizations as the center for promotion.
