On this day, 68 years ago, on October 15, 1957 (August 22, the lunar calendar, 1957), the central government formulated the criteria for classifying "rightists" elements. On National Day in 1957, a procession held a huge slogan "Carry out the Anti-Rightist Struggle to the End." On October 15, 1957, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issued the "Notice on the Criteria for the Classification of Rightists." The standards stipulated in the "Notice" are: (1) Oppose the socialist system. (2) Oppose the dictatorship of the proletariat and democratic centralism. (3) Oppose the leadership position of the Communist Party in the country's political life. (4) Dividing the unity of the people with the purpose of opposing socialism and the Communist Party. (5) Organizing and actively participating in small groups opposed to socialism and the Communist Party; plotting to overthrow the leadership of the Communist Party of a certain department or a certain grassroots unit; inciting riots against the Communist Party and the people's government. (6) Providing ideas, soliciting connections, communicating intelligence for the rightists who committed the above-mentioned crimes, and reporting to them the secrets of revolutionary organizations. The "Notice" also stipulates that anyone under any of the following circumstances should be classified as a far-right:(1) ambitious figures, leaders, masterminds and backbone elements in rightist activities. (2) Elements who put forward programmatic opinions against the Party and socialism and actively advocate such opinions. (3) Elements who carry out particularly bad and resolute anti-Party and anti-socialist activities. (4) Elements who have consistently opposed communism and the people throughout history and actively carried out reactionary activities during this Rightist attack. The central government also stipulated the authority for review and approval and six circumstances in which they should not be classified as rightists. The notice also pointed out that appropriate procedures must be followed for classifying rightists.
