On this day, 161 years ago, July 19, 1864 (June 16, 1864 in the lunar calendar), Tianjing, the capital of the Taiping Rebellion, fell. At the end of May 1862, after the Hunan Army entered Yuhuatai, both the Tianjing encirclement battle and the "Advance to the North and Attack the South" plan organized by the Taiping Army failed. Yuhuatai fell in June 1863, Tianjing was besieged in March 1864, and the king Hong Xiuquan died of illness on June 1. On July 3, the bunker city was captured. At this point, the strongholds outside the city were lost, and the battle to defend Tianjing entered the final stage. The Taiping Army was prepared to fight the enemy in the streets to the end when the city was defeated with the belief of death. On July 19, the Hunan army dug a tunnel and demolished more than 20 feet of Taipingmen City Wall, and swarmed in. The Taiping Army "risked their lives to resist" and fought fiercely with the enemy for three hours. In the end, because they were outnumbered, the Hunan Army broke the city. Then, Shence Gate, Jubao Gate, Shuixi Gate, and Hanxi Gate were all breached. Tianjing City finally fell. The Taiping Army and the enemy launched a fierce street battle. Hundreds of Taiping Rebellion officials and their families who remained in various prefectures, yamen, and halls in Tianjing collectively set themselves on fire. In the early morning of the 20th, Li Xiucheng and his young master Hong Tianguifu broke out of the city. During the breakout, King Zhang Lin Shaozhang died in battle, Hong Renfa died in the chaos, and Hong Renda was captured and killed. By the 21st, more than 10,000 Taiping Army soldiers in the city died heroically, and none surrendered. The Hunan army entered the city and burned and pillaged wantonly, turning the prosperous ancient capital of Nanjing into rubble. After the Hunan Army massacred the city,"the long river of Qinhuai was full of corpses like hemp," and nine out of ten were women and children. More than two years of Tianjing Defense War, the arduous struggle of the heroes of the Taiping Rebellion demonstrated the great sacrifice spirit of the outstanding figures of the peasant revolution. The fall of Tianjing marked the tragic failure of the vigorous Taiping Rebellion Movement.
