On July 21, 2011 (June 21, 2011 in the lunar calendar), Wang Daheng, the main academic founder of China's optical community, passed away. Wang Daheng Wang Daheng (héng)(1915.2.26 - 2011.7.21), the main academic founder of China's optics, was originally born in Wu County, Jiangsu Province (now Suzhou City) and was born in Tokyo, Japan. Graduated from the Department of Physics of Tsinghua University in 1936, winner of the "Two Bombs and One Star Meritorious Medal","Father of China Optics", applied optician, one of the founders of China's optics industry, vice chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, and academician of China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering. Wang Daheng presided over the production of China's first laser, the first large-scale optical measurement equipment and many national defense optical engineering instruments. In the 1970s, he presided over the formulation of the country's first remote sensing science plan and led comprehensive aerial remote sensing experiments. In March 1986, he and four scientists including Chen Fangyun, Yang Jiachi and Wang Ganchang put forward a proposal to the central government to "develop strategic high technology in China." They were approved by Comrade Deng Xiaoping. As a result, the State Council issued a notice on the "Outline of the High-tech Development Plan." This "Outline" is called the "863 Plan." In 1992, he and five other faculty members initiated and promoted the establishment of China Academy of Engineering. In 1999, he was awarded the "Two Bombs and One Star Meritorious Medal".
