On July 21, 1298, the Battle of Franklin in the Scottish War of Independence broke out. Nearly 10,000 Scottish rebels under the command of William Wallace confronted a 20,000-strong army led by King Edward I of England. Although the Scottish rebels fought bravely, due to their inferior weapons and outnumbered numbers, most of the rebels were killed or captured, and Wallace escaped alone.
