Educator Pi Zongshi was born on August 23, 1887
On this day, 138 years ago, August 23, 1887 (July 5, 1887 in the lunar calendar), educator Pi Zongshi was born. Pi Zongshi (1887.8.23~1967), whose characters are white and nicknamed Haihuan. People from Changsha, Hunan. Born on August 23, 1887 in a peasant family in Pijia Dawu, Fulinpu, Xichong, Dongxiang, Changsha. In the twenty-eighth year of Guangxu (1902), he studied in Changsha. The following year, he obtained a Hunan official fee and went to Japan to study as an intern. Later, he was admitted to Tokyo Imperial University to study political economy. Joined the China League in 1905. Returned to China after the Revolution of 1911. In 1912, he founded the Hankou Republic of China Daily with Zhou Gensheng, Yang Duanliu, Ren Kainan and others. Shortly after its publication, Hankou Republic of China Daily was closed down because of its opposition to Yuan Shikai's declaration of emperor. Later, he went to the University of London to study economics. He returned to China after completing his studies in 1920, and soon after, he was invited by Cai Yuanpei to serve as a professor and library director at Peking University Law School. In August 1927, he followed Cai to Nanjing, where he served as a member of the Central Legal Affairs Committee of the National Government, and was appointed as a member of the Preparatory Committee of the National Guangdong University (later renamed Sun Yat-sen University). In April 1928, he served as Secretary-General of the Ministry of Justice. In September, he was invited to serve as professor and dean of the School of Social Sciences at National Wuhan University. In June 1929, the School of Social Sciences was changed to the School of Law, continuing to serve as professor and dean, teaching finance courses. In 1930, he served concurrently as the chairman of the Department of Economics at the School of Law. In April 1933, he served as provost and library director of Wuhan University. In October 1934, he concurrently served as the chairman of the Law Department of the Law School. In July 1936, he served as president of Hunan University. He has been engaged in education for 21 years and praised Cai Yuanpei's school policy of "freedom of thought" and "inclusiveness", cared for students, respected teachers, encouraged academic research, supported club activities and promoted anti-Japanese and national salvation, and was ostracized by CC elements. In 1941, he resigned and left the education industry. In July 1942, he was elected as a member of the 3rd National Political Council. In May 1945, he served as a member of the Education Research Committee of the Ministry of Education of the National Government. 1949.7~1949.12 President of Hunan University On April 11, 1950, the Sixth Meeting of the Central People's Government Committee approved the appointment of Pi Zongshi as a member of the Financial and Economic Committee of the Central South Military and Political Committee, and a letter of appointment signed by Mao Zedong was issued to him. In 1954, he was transferred to the post of counselor of the Hubei Province government and was elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the Hubei Province CPPCC. Later, he was elected as a member of the Central Unity Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Kuomintang of China. In 1956, he attended the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference as a non-voting participant. In 1967, he died of cerebral hemorrhage at the Second Wuhan Hospital at the age of 80.
