On this day 46 years ago, on December 18, 1979 (October 29, 1979 lunar calendar), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was adopted. On December 18, 1979, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. The full text consists of 30 articles. The Convention states that discrimination against women violates the principles of equal rights and respect for human dignity, prevents women from participating on equal terms with men in the political, social, economic and cultural life of the country, hinders the prosperous development of society and the family, and makes it more difficult for women to fully develop their potential to serve the country and humanity. The Convention condemns all forms of discrimination against women and requires States parties to take measures to achieve equality between men and women in political participation, education, employment, social security, law, marriage, etc. On September 29, 1980, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China adopted a decision to accede to this Convention. At the same time, it declared that it would not be bound by Article 29, paragraph 1, of the Convention. This paragraph stipulates that in the event of a dispute between contracting states, if an agreement cannot be reached after arbitration, either party may submit the dispute to the International Court of Justice for adjudication.
