34 years ago today, October 1, 1991 (August 24, 1991 lunar calendar), the International Day of the elderly. In order to attract the attention of countries to the issue of population aging, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on December 14, 1990, deciding that October 1 every year from 1991 would be "International Day of the elderly". In 1992, the 47th United Nations General Assembly adopted the World Declaration on Ageing and decided to designate 1999 as "International Year of the elderly".
