Nie Rongzhen (1899-1992), born on December 29, 1899, in a family of ordinary laborers in Wutan Town, Jiangjin, Sichuan Province. Participated in the Nanchang Uprising and the Guangzhou Uprising. He served as an instructor at Huangpu Military Academy, chief of staff of the Central Military Commission, political commissar of the Red 1st Army, deputy division chief of the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army, commander of the North China Military Region, deputy chief of general staff, acting chief of general staff, and vice chairperson of the Central Military Commission. He served as a vice premier of the State Council. He first entered a private school when he was a child, and entered a new school after the 1911 Revolution. After graduating from primary school, he was admitted to Jiangjin County Middle School. During the "May 4th" Movement, he participated in the anti-imperialist patriotic struggle and embarked on the road of work-study in France at the end of 1919. During his time in France, he investigated the labor movement and participated in the patriotic struggles of Chinese students. He joined the Communist Party of China in Europe in August 1922 and transferred to the Communist Party of China the following year. During his study abroad, Nie Rongzhen went to France, Belgium, and the Soviet Union. In Belgium he studied chemical engineering, and after arriving in the Soviet Union in 1924, he began to study military. After returning to China in 1925, he served as secretary and political instructor of the Political Department of Huangpu Military Academy, special commissioner of the Military Commission of the Guangdong District Committee of the Communist Party of China, and secretary of the Military Commission of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1927, he served as the former secretary of the Communist Party of China's enemy military committee and the party representative of the 11th Army of the Nanchang Uprising Army. In the same year, he participated in the leadership of the Guangzhou Uprising. During the Agrarian Revolutionary War, he served as secretary of the Military Commission of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of During the Anti-Japanese War, he served as deputy division commander and political commissar of the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army, commander and political commissar of the Jinchaji Military Region, and secretary of the Jinchaji Branch of the CPC Central Committee. During the War of Liberation, he served as commander of the North China Military Region, second secretary of the North China Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Revolutionary Military Commission, and commander of the Pingjin Garrison Region. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as mayor of Beijing, vice chairperson of the People's Revolutionary Military Commission, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, acting chief of general staff, vice premier of the State Council and head of the Central Science Group, director of the National Science and Technology Commission, director of the National Defense Science and He was a vice chairperson of the First, Second and Third National Defense Commissions, a vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Fourth and Fifth National People's Congress, a member of the Seventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, a member of the Eighth Political Bureau of the Central Committee, a member of the Ninth and Tenth Central Committees, and a member of the Eleventh and Twelfth Political Bureau of the Central Committee.
