On August 17, 1960 (the 25th of the sixth lunar month), 11 new countries were born in Africa.

One by one, European colonies in Africa are forming independent governments. The map of the entire African continent is being redrawn. In just one month, eight new countries have been created in the territories of French East Africa and French Equatorial Africa.

Dahomey took the lead in demonstrating and became an independent country on the 1st of this month, with 1.7 million residents and an area of 44,000 square miles. On the 3rd, the Republic of Niger was proclaimed (Population 2.5 million, area 459,000 square miles); 5th, Upper Volta Republic (Population 3.3 million, area 106,000 square miles); 7th, Ivory Coast (Population 2.5 million, area 127,500 square miles), on the 11th, the Republic of Chad (population 2.5 million, area 501,000 square miles); on the 13th, the Central African Republic (population 1.1 million, area 238,000 square miles); on the 15th, the former French Congo-Republic of the Congo (population 760,000, area 132,000 square miles) declared independence one after another. The Gabonese Republic (population of 470,000 and an area of 102,000 square miles) and the former Belgian Congo, Somalia and Madagasga all became independent countries this year.
