On this day, 63 years ago, on September 30, 1962 (September 2, 1962 in the lunar calendar), black Americans entered white universities and caused riots. White racists tried to prevent black James Meredith from enrolling at the University of Mississippi, and racial violence in the southern United States was triggered. On September 30, 1962, when the University of Mississippi admitted a black student, James Meredith, provoked violence by white students with apartheid sentiments, causing riots and forcing Governor Ross Barnett to talk to President Kennedy. But no matter how fierce the dispute was, James Meredith eventually became the first black student in the college of white students. A week ago, the College Board decided to allow Meredith to register in accordance with the government's anti-apartheid law. The decision angered Barnett, who vowed to fight the council and the government to uphold the school's apartheid system. Kennedy and the governor negotiated by phone, but Barnett refused to back down. President Kennedy dispatched national troops to the area in the name of enforcing the law and forced students to obey the law. When a previous decision was made to allow Meredith to register, state police had sealed off his residence. A massive riot broke out after Meredith was awarded admission. Groups of angry white students shouted on campus in protest, and at least three people were killed in the struggle. Fifty people were injured.
