On December 4, 1950, folk musician "Blind A Bing" Hua Yanjun passed away
Seventy-five years ago today, on December 4, 1950 (October 25, 1950), the folk musician Hua Yanjun, "Blind A Bing," passed away. A Bing, whose real name was Hua Yanjun, was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu on August 17, 1893. He was the biological son of Hua Qinghe, the leading Taoist priest of Lei Zundian Temple, but he lived by his father's side as a righteous son and apprentice. His mother, Wu Shi, who was remarried as a widow and was not allowed by feudal rituals, died of depression at the age of 4. A Bing's father was good at playing various instruments, and A Bing studied music with him from an early age. At the age of 18, A Bing's playing skills were already recognized by his peers and were called "Little Heaven Master". Ah Bing was good at playing flutes, pipa, erhu, drums and other musical instruments throughout his life. He could play more than 300 pieces of music and was good at singing. A Bing's life was bumpy. After Hua Qinghe's death, A Bing succeeded him as the head of the Daoist Hall of Lei Zun. He participated in the performance of the local drummer's music class, which was regarded by the Taoists as a loss of Taoist dignity. He was expelled from the monastery, and because he often went to the streets alone to play for the masses, he annoyed the drummer's music class and was excluded from the drummer's music class. Since then, A Bing has become a wandering artist who often haunts the streets and alleys of Wuxi. Due to poverty and illness, A Bing suffered from eye disease and blindness in his 30s, and was later called Blind A Bing. As a blind folk entertainer, Ah Bing was deeply persecuted by the evil society and suffered the miserable pain of the world. Therefore, he often criticized and protested the old society through his cynical voice. During the Northern Expedition, he played the revolutionary song "Down with the Great Powers" with a pipa. Chiang Kai-shek betrayed the revolution, and the Japanese imperialists invaded China on a large scale. He also composed and sang to expose the enemy. During this period, the people of Wuxi were in the streets, and teahouse stations often heard him playing patriotic tunes such as "March of the Volunteers" and "On the Songhua River" with a huqin. In the 1940s, Ah Bing also sang "Gold Yuan Coupons Flying in the Sky" to satirize the corrupt rule of the Kuomintang. It is precisely because Ah Bing often sang the voice of the people that his name was deeply imprinted in the hearts of people around Wuxi. In his long life as a wandering entertainer, A Bing composed and performed more than 270 pieces of folk music. Shortly after the liberation of the whole country, the relevant central units sent people to record the music arranged by A Bing. Due to A Bing's illness in the old society, he vomited blood and died on December 4, 1950. It became a pity in the music industry that more of the music he arranged could not be recorded. Only the pipa and erhu have been recorded: "Two Springs Reflect the Moon", "Tingsong", "Cold Spring Breeze", "Big Waves Rush the Sand", "Dragon Boat", "Zhaojun Out of the Fortress". The Erhu solo song "Erquan Reflects the Moon" depicts the beautiful scenery of the "second spring in the world" in Huiquan Mountain, a famous scenic spot in Wuxi. Its melody is like a song, and it is euphemistic and pleasant to listen. It fully expresses the author's praise for the beautiful scenery of the motherland, and expresses the author's infinite affection for the great rivers and mountains of the motherland. The work also depicts the bitterness of the world and the longing and hope for a better life in the future. It makes the listener feel calm and comfortable from time to time, and sometimes feel a ray of sadness and sadness, and sometimes enter a clear, strong and uplifting artistic conception... The Erhu song "Tingsong" borrows the scenery of pine trees to express his patriotic feelings. The pipa song "Dragon Boat" expresses his love for the patriotic poet Qu Yuan and his yearning for a better life. A Bing's musical attainments have been recognized by Chinese and foreign people. The film entitled "Two Springs Reflect the Moon" introduced Ah Bing's career and was premiered in 1979. On September 11, 1983, the Ministry of Culture and the Musicians' Association jointly held a concert to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Ah Bing's birth. The Boston Symphony Orchestra in the United States, the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in Germany, the Lyon Symphony Orchestra in France, etc., and some world-renowned foreign bands have played the adapted "Two Springs Reflect the Moon". "A Bing Memorial Hall" with A Bing's former residence as the main body is located in Wuxi City Library Road. The exhibition room named "Mr. Li Lanqing's inscription" displays a brief introduction to A Bing's life, as well as various book materials and audio-visual materials related to A Bing's commemorative articles. Among them, the most valuable is a 1952 "Blind A Bing Album" donated by a Japanese friend. In his later years, A Bing was poor and ill, and he and his widow Dong Caidi lived in a small bungalow of 20 square meters in the easternmost row in front of the dojo. The interior walls are hung with portraits of A Bing (1893-1950) and Dong Caidi (1888-1951). The furnishings of daily necessities in this room are completely restored according to the memories of A Bing's contemporaries, and are basically faithful to their original appearance
