Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On December 19, 1988, Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi visited my country
On this day, 37 years ago, December 19, 1988 (November 11, 1988 in the lunar calendar), Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi visited our country. Li Peng and Rajiv Gandhi exchanged greetings. From December 19 to 23, 1988, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of the Republic of India paid an official visit to our country. This was the first time that an Indian Prime Minister visited China in 34 years. At 10 a.m. on December 19, Premier Li Peng of the State Council presided over a grand ceremony in the Central Hall of the Great Hall of the People to warmly welcome Rajiv Gandhi and his wife and other Indian distinguished guests. On the morning of the same day, Li Peng held formal talks with Rajiv Gandhi. Li Peng pointed out that China and India are both countries with ancient civilizations in Asia and the two most populous developing countries in the world. After interrupting mutual exchanges for more than 30 years, Prime Minister Gandhi led a delegation to visit China today. This move in itself is worthy of praise. Li Peng emphasized that the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence advocated by the leaders of China and India in the past have strong vitality. Regardless of whether the social systems are the same or not, when handling state-to-state relations, the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence can only be followed. As advocates of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, China and India should become models for implementing the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. In the 1950s, China-India relations were very friendly. Later, due to well-known reasons, China-India relations deteriorated and even clashed. This is unfortunate. We hope this will not happen again in the future. Peace and development are the trend of the contemporary world, and we should follow this trend. Improving relations between China and India is not only beneficial to the two countries, but also conducive to peace in Asia. There are many places where China and India can learn from and learn from each other. When talking about bilateral relations, Premier Li said that the issue that hinders the improvement of relations between the two countries is the China-India border issue. As long as both sides are sincere and seek a way to resolve the border issue based on the principle of mutual understanding and mutual accommodation, through unremitting efforts, this problem can be solved. Premier Li also said that the China government has taken note of the principled positions of successive Indian governments: Xizang is a part of China; India does not interfere in China's internal affairs; and India does not allow Xizang separatists to carry out political activities in India to split China. We appreciate this principled position of the Indian government. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi said during the talks that the current international situation has indeed undergone great changes, but there are also some "traps." As far as the international situation is concerned, the most basic issue is to eliminate the fundamental factors of tension. Therefore, he agreed with Premier Li Peng on establishing a new international political order and a new international economic order in the world. The concept of containment should be replaced by peaceful coexistence. He said that the most difficult issue between China and India is the border issue, and we should resolve this issue through peaceful and friendly consultations. India is determined to solve this problem through mutual benefit. He believes that before this issue is resolved, while maintaining peace and tranquility on the border, the two countries can increase exchanges and cooperation in other areas of bilateral relations. During the talks, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi also reiterated that the Indian government's policy on the Xizang issue has not changed. Xizang is an autonomous region of China. The Indian government does not allow any political forces to carry out political activities in India that are harmful to China and are regarded as interfering in China's internal affairs. That night, Li Peng held a banquet at the Great Hall of the People to welcome Rajiv Gandhi, his wife and their party. On the morning of December 21, Chairman of the Central Military Commission Deng Xiaoping met with Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the Great Hall of the People and said that the combined population of China and India exceeds 1.8 billion, accounting for more than 1/3 of the world's population. Our two countries have a shared responsibility for mankind, and we should make use of the current peaceful international environment to develop ourselves. People are talking about the next century as the "Asia-Pacific Century." It seems that this century has already arrived. In fact, the real "Asia-Pacific Century" will not come until China, India and other developing countries in the region develop. Deng Xiaoping mentioned to Gandhi that his mother accompanied his grandfather Prime Minister Nehru to visit China in 1954. He said that the relationship between our two countries was very good at that time. "The situation in China has been mutually unpleasant for quite some time. Forget it! Everything focuses on the future." Raja Gandhi agreed. He said he hoped relations between the two countries could be restored to their previous state. Deng Xiaoping also recalled: "When I visited Nepal in 1978, I met your foreign minister. I asked him to bring a letter to your mother: We should improve relations. There is no reason why we should be unfriendly and there is no reason not to improve our relationship. Since then, there have been some contacts between the two countries. But it was your visit that really started to improve relations, so thank you." Prime Minister Rahma Gandhi said that although tensions in the world have decreased, there are still hegemonism and group politics. The new international political order should be based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. In addition, we believe that the current economic order is subordinate and unfavorable to developing countries. In the field of establishing a new international economic order, we can also work together. Gandhi said that years of differences between India and China have not reduced the common bonds between us. Our two countries have fought for political independence and are now fighting for economic independence. China's modernization drive is a new great revolution. On the afternoon of December 21, Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi held a press conference. "There are still many differences between the two countries, but we are willing to cooperate in areas where we have common ground," he said. He said,"There have been no contact between senior leaders of India and China for many years. Fortunately, however, bilateral trade still existed during this period. We will be able to fill this gap and find many common foundations on which to continue to work." On December 23, China and India issued a joint press communiqué. Prime Minister Rahma Gandhi was born in Mumbai on August 20, 1944. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, UK in 1962, to study mechanical engineering. He has been a pilot with Air India since May 1968 and was promoted to captain in 1972. In June 1981, he was elected as a member of the Wolesi Sabha in Uttar Pradesh as a candidate of the Congress Party (Anglo-Gandhi faction). In February 1983, he was appointed General Secretary of the Congress Party (UK). On October 31, 1984, Raja Gandhi became Prime Minister after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi, and in November was elected Chairman of the Congress Party (UK). In December of the same year, India held its eighth general election. The Congress Party (UK) won and Raja Gandhi became prime minister again.
