On September 4, 1995, three US soldiers stationed in Okinawa raped a Japanese schoolgirl, causing an uproar on the Japanese archipelago. Various mass protest rallies and marches continued one after another, and spread from Okinawa to the whole country, with the number of participants increasing from hundreds to tens of thousands. Major Japanese newspapers also wrote articles asking the government to use this incident as an opportunity to revise the unequal Japan-US Status Agreement. On the 21st, US President Clinton expressed regret over the incident. In the face of the rising tide of protests, the Okinawa Prosecutor's Office prosecuted the violent US soldiers.
