Fifty years ago today, September 2, 1975 (July 27, 1975 in the lunar calendar), Egypt and Israel signed the Sinai Agreement. In the Third Middle East War in 1967, Israel occupied Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Since then, in order to eliminate Soviet influence in the Middle East, the United States has committed itself to brokering peace talks between Egypt and Israel on the Sinai Peninsula issue. On September 2, 1975, the agreement between Egypt and Israel on Sinai was signed. This is the second agreement on the Sinai issue after Egypt and Israel reached an agreement on disengagement of the two countries 'armies in January 1974. In the agreement, both sides made concessions. Israel will withdraw from parts of Sinai and abandon demands for an end to the state of war. Egypt agreed to open the Suez Canal to Israeli non-military supplies. The Egypt-Israel agreement on the Sinai issue was one of the few diplomatic achievements of the United States during the Ford administration. It brought Egypt closer to the United States, increased the United States 'position as an "arbitrator" on the Middle East diplomatic stage, and further excluded Soviet influence in the Middle East. However, the limitations of the Sinai Agreement are also very obvious. It is unlikely to fundamentally alleviate the conflict in the Middle East. In fact, after the agreement was signed, hostile propaganda between the two sides continued. Relations between Israel and other Arab countries, especially those that are more radical, remain highly hostile. Israel is unwilling to give up the Arab territories it occupies. The fundamental position of the United States in favoring Israel has not changed. The Soviet Union will not give up its attempt to use the opportunity to intervene in Middle East affairs. The situation in the Middle East is still severe, and the U.S. Middle East policy is still facing difficulties and difficult steps to achieve real success.
