The Black Sea Straits Convention was concluded on July 20, 1936

On this day 89 years ago, on July 20, 1936 (the third day of the sixth lunar month), the Black Sea Straits Convention was concluded.

On July 20, 1936, the signatories of the Treaty of Lausanne signed the Convention on the Regime of Straits in Montreux, Switzerland. The Black Sea Straits (i.e. the Bosporus, the Dardanelles and the Sea of Marmara between them) have long been part of the Eastern problem. In July 1923, Turkey and the Allied powers such as Britain and France reached the Lausanne Peace Treaty, which stipulated the demilitarization of the Black Sea Straits.
