On August 12, 1948, Zhu Ziqing passed away
On this day, 77 years ago, on August 12, 1948 (July 8, 1948 lunar calendar), Zhu Ziqing passed away. Zhu Ziqing, a professor at Tsinghua University, died in Beiping on August 12, 1948. Zhu Ziqing, born in 1898, was originally from Shaoxing, Zhejiang. In 1916, he studied in the Department of Philosophy of Peking University. In 1922, he founded the monthly magazine "Poetry" with Yu Pingbo and Ye Shengtao, which was the earliest poetry journal since the "May Fourth Movement". In 1923, he published the first poem "Destruction". In October 1926, he published the first collection of essays "Background". In 1931, he went to study in the UK and traveled to several European countries. In 1932, he returned to China to head the Department of Literature of Tsinghua University. In 1947, he protested against the arbitrary arrest of people by the Peiping authorities, and signed a declaration on anti-hunger and anti-civil war. In June 1948, he protested against the US policy of helping Japan and signed the declaration on refusing to receive US aid flour. Later, due to a recurrence of stomach problems, the treatment was ineffective, and he died of poverty. Before his death, he also instructed his family not to buy US aid flour. Mao Zedong praised Zhu Ziqing's spirit of starving to death rather than receiving US "relief powder", praising him for "showing the heroic spirit of our nation". On September 11, 1998, the People's Daily published an article written by the famous journalist Bai Sheng, "Miss Teacher Zhu Ziqing Forever". The article said: I remember that in 1946, Mr. Zhu Ziqing returned to Peking Tsinghua University from Kunming Southwest Union University to continue teaching. In those two years, I happened to be studying at Tsinghua University. In the literature department, I chose Mr. Zhu's class, which was about "History of Chinese Literature", "Special Studies on the History of Literature", "Selected Poems of the Past Dynasties" and other classes! Mr.'s meticulous, conscientious and responsible teaching spirit deeply moved our group of young students. At that time, due to the hard life of being displaced for a long time during the 8-year Anti-Japanese War, Mr. Zhu suffered from stomach problems from time to time, and his health was not as good as before. But every time he was in class, he still carefully prepared lectures and wrote handouts, and he never scribbled one stroke at a time on the blackboard. Mr. Zhu not only taught seriously in class, but also discussed problems with our young students after class. He was always so humble, he was kind to us and respected our opinions very much. Even when Mr. wrote his own articles, he often had to listen to the opinions of his classmates. When a student writes a book report or academic paper, Mr. Zhu always carefully corrects and guides it, and he never misses even a sentence or a punctuation. To this day, I still have an academic paper that Mr. Zhu revised for me with a pencil. In October 1947, the Department of Chinese Literature held an orientation meeting. On New Year's Day in 1948, the Department of Chinese Literature held a New Year's party at the home of Professor Yu Guanying. Mr. Zhu attended and twisted the Yangko with his classmates. Mr. Zhu was very interested in the Yangko that was brought into the Qinghua Garden from the Liberated Area at that time. He was very interested in squeezing into the ranks of our male and female classmates, dancing three steps forward and one step back, and studying the most seriously. At that time, although Mr. Zhu was already fifty years old, we were deeply moved and admired by his serious attitude towards learning from the young people and the new era. What I remember most is the touching scene of the music party held at Mr. Yu Guanying's house on New Year's Day night in 1948. That night, Mr. Zhu was ill, but he still jostled with his classmates in a row to play Yangko enthusiastically and seriously. The classmates dressed him affectionately in the customs of the people, put on a red and green dress, and wore a big red flower on his head. As for Mr. Zhu, he expressed his strong support for the popular form and content of the performance from the people of the liberated areas. His spirit deeply moved many teachers and students present. But what I still feel guilty about is that Mr. Zhu should not have been allowed to eat the Lantern Festival that night. Although he only tasted one, he had a stomach attack the next day, and fortunately he recovered quickly. During Mr. Zhu's time at Tsinghua University, the relationship between our teachers and students was very close and harmonious. He was both our strict teacher and our loving father. How much effort did he spend on the students! Although Mr. Zhu's health was getting worse day by day, he still endured the pain, taught us classes, read and revised thesis reports, and showed more and more active support for our student movement. Mr. Zhu was always happy to attend various literary and poetry evenings held by our students, and he also gave speeches that were warmly welcomed by the students. Mr. Zhu also has his own opinions on the school policy. Under the chairpersonship of Mr. Zhu, the Department of Chinese Literature formulated the direction of the department to study the literature of the old era from a new perspective and to create a new era of literature. Mr. Zhu himself has left us a valuable cultural heritage in classical literature, new literature, literary criticism, and Chinese teaching. In the summer of 1948, after the university graduation examination, the party organization decided to transfer me to study in the Liberated Area. The day before I left Qinghua Garden, I came to Mr. Zhu's house on the 16th of the North Courtyard with attachment and said goodbye to him. I only said that I had something to leave Beiping for a while, and I would definitely come to Qinghua Garden to visit him when I came back. The thoughtful Mr. Zhu probably guessed that I was going to the Liberated Area! He looked at me intently and said softly: Why did you leave in such a hurry! I was speechless to answer, this is the decision of the organization! I really regret why I didn't tell Mr. Zhu clearly at that time that I was going to the Liberated Area! Who expected this farewell to be the last meeting between our teachers and students. I remember that day, Mr. Zhu said a lot of words of encouragement to me. When we parted, Mr. Zhu not only walked me outside the door, but also slowly walked several steps, and then stood in the courtyard to look at me. I shook my hands and turned my head to look at Mr. Zhu. It was not until I could no longer see his shadow that I noticed that tears had blurred my eyes. When Mr. Zhu died on August 12, 1948, I was studying in Bozhen, a liberated area of central Hebei. It was about a day or two before I learned that he had a relapse of stomach problems and was sent to Peking University Hospital. A few days after the operation, he passed away in a hospital bed. When I heard this news suddenly in the liberated area, an uncontrollable sadness haunted me. I sat alone in a farmer's hut, sobbing. The sky outside the window was overcast and drizzled, as if I were weeping and mourning. Mr. Zhu's gentle face, wearing a light yellow half-old suit, holding a book in one hand and a cane in the other, slowly walking on the tree-lined road of Qinghua Garden, as well as the scene of Mr. Zhu's strict and serious lectures in class, appeared in front of me one by one. How can I not miss it affectionately! The heroic heroism of "not being eaten by shame" in Hangzhou in 1921 with friends. From left: Xu Angruo, Ye Shengtao, Zhu Ziqing, Yu Pingbo. Zhu Ziqing and Chen Zhuyin have a deep affection for each other. Zhu Ziqing and his wife took a group photo with friends in 1933
