On June 20, 1998, Yunju Temple announced that it would place the thousand-year-old stone scripture into the underground cave
On this day, 27 years ago, on June 20, 1998 (May 26, 1998, the Lunar Calendar), Yunju Temple announced that it would place the thousand-year-old stone scripture into the crypt. The Buddhist classics (partial) brought back by Xuanzang, Master of the Tang Dynasty Sanzang Sanzang, at the press conference on "Return of the Stone Sutra" held on June 20, 1998, the person in charge of relevant parties said that due to lack of technical means, it has been seriously polluted by the atmosphere for a long time. The Buddhist stone carvings unearthed from Yunju Temple in Beijing, a key national cultural relic protection unit in 1957, have been "seriously weathered." In order to better preserve these key cultural relics, they were returned to the crypt for collection on September 9, 1999. According to historical records, the first person to advocate carving Buddhist scriptures on stone was Huisi, an eminent monk of the Tiantai Sect in Nanyue, Northern Qi. The first person to implement this matter was his disciple Jing Wan. Since its inception in the Daye period of the Sui Dynasty more than 1300 years ago, it has gone through thousands of years of Liao, Jin, Yuan and Ming dynasties. Countless monks have worked hard and carved a total of 1122 Buddhist scriptures, 3572 volumes, and 14278 stone scriptures. After completion, they were hidden in the nine Buddhist scriptures caves in Shijing Mountain near Yunju Temple and in the underground cave under the Jingjing Tower in the Temple. Buddhists say that these stone scriptures contain the classics of Buddhist scriptures. The Liao and Jin scriptures are based on the "Khitan Tributary Sutra", which can correct the errors in existing Buddhist scriptures. Jing Wan left the main theme of carving scriptures during her lifetime: "This scripture is intended to fill the scriptures when Dharma is difficult in the future. If there are scriptures in the world, I am willing not to open them at will." But later generations did not follow this statement. According to Mei Ninghua, director of the Beijing City Bureau of Cultural Relics, a total of 10082 stone scripture tablets were unearthed near the South Tower of Yunju Temple in 1957. The showroom placed in is actually a warehouse, which is not conducive to displaying to the world or protecting it. Over the past 41 years, although the cultural relics department and relevant experts have tried to protect it in many ways, they have not yet been able to fundamentally solve the problem. Now, some stone scripture tablets have literally peeled off, some have fallen off in whole pieces, some have powder surfaces, and some have large areas of text falling off. Experts believe that re-releasing these stone scriptures to the original burial place and sealing them in the underground cave of the pressing scripture tower is the best solution to prevent the weathering of the stone scriptures at present. The Buddhist relics collected in Leiyin Cave were placed and deposited in the cave in the twelfth year of the Sui Dynasty (616 AD). In the 20th year of Wanli of the Ming Dynasty (1592 AD), it was re-placed in the stone letter. Only three and a half grains were discovered in 1981 and are regarded as "the most important treasure of the country."
