On November 5, 1883, Sudan retaliated against the British "Expeditionary Force"
On this day, 142 years ago, November 5, 1883 (October 6, 1883 in the lunar calendar), Sudan fought back against the British "Expeditionary Force." The British army defeated the Ma army's first counterattack at 6:30 a.m. After the 1870s, Sudan became the sphere of influence of the United Kingdom. The Sudanese people were subjected to the double oppression of the Egyptian sultan and the British colonists. A People's Rebellion led by Mahdi was born. The slogan of "We would rather fight for thousands of lives than pay a penny of taxes" and "build a beautiful society with universal equality and justice everywhere" resounded throughout the land of Sudan. Mahdi was an insurgent leader with rich military talents. He knew that his troops were poorly equipped and their personnel lacked combat experience. Therefore, he decisively pulled his team into the Kadir Mountains, which had a dangerous terrain and a good mass base, and successfully smashed the successive encirclement and suppression campaigns of the government's punitive troops. We will use this place as a base to continuously strengthen our team and prepare for attack. In 1882, Mahdi personally led the rebels out of the mountains and launched an attack on the government forces. At the beginning of 1883, he captured Ubayid, Sudan's second largest city, shaking the whole of Sudan and pushing the national armed struggle to a climax. In order to remedy this situation, the British colonial authorities and the Khdif government mobilized a well-equipped expeditionary force of 12,000 people, including infantry, cavalry and artillery, to launch a fierce attack on the Mahdi Rebellion. The battle began on November 5, 1883. Mahdi cleverly adopted the tactics of clearing the field and luring the enemy deep. He first lured the enemy to Hegan, south of Ubayid, and then tightly surrounded the expeditionary force in one fell swoop. Under the fierce attack of the rebels, Hicks, the commander of the Expeditionary Force, was killed on the spot, and the Expeditionary Force was completely collapsed. Since the victory of the Battle of Hegan, the situation between the enemy and the enemy has undergone fundamental changes. The strength of the rebels has surpassed that of the enemy, promoting the formation of the domestic national democratic united front.
