(October 6, 1552 - May 11, 1610), an Italian Jesuit missionary and scholar, came to live in China during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. His original name was literally translated into Chinese as Matteo Leach, and Matteo Ricci was his Chinese name, known as Xitai, Qingtai, and Xijiang. He was highly respected by scholars in China and was honored as "Taixi Confucian". He was one of the pioneers of Catholic missions in China and the first Western scholar to read Chinese literature and study Chinese classics.
