On this day, 496 years ago, on June 8, 1529 (May 3, 1529), a major religious war in the Middle Ages broke out, the War of Capel. The War of Capel was a war that broke out in the Swiss Reformation movement. The Catholic states of Lucerne, Uri, Xuanwitz, Ontwalden, and Zug in the Confederation of Switzerland and Turkey formed an alliance to prevent Zurich from spreading Protestantism in the condominium. Therefore, on June 8, 1529, Zurich crusaded against this alliance, but soon after the fighting, a ceasefire was reached at the Capel monastery on June 26, 1529. According to the agreement, the Catholic states recognized freedom of religion in the condominium. But then they discovered that the state of Zurich was imposing Protestantism in the condominium of Thurgau, so they suddenly launched a war on the state of Zurich in October 1531. On October 11, they defeated the army of the state of Zurich at Capel, and the Protestant leader Zwingli was killed.
