University of Leipzig established the University of Leipzig (Universisit? tLeipzig) is located in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. It was founded in 1409. It is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the second oldest university in the German jurisdiction today, second only to the University of Heidelberg (1386). The other two universities were founded before the University of Leipzig University of Cologne (1388 - 1798, rebuilt in 1919) and the University of Erfort (1392 - 1816, rebuilt in 1994) both closed and reopened. From 1953 to 1991, the University of Leipzig was known as the "Karl Marx University of Leipzig". Since its establishment, it has experienced nearly 600 years of uninterrupted teaching and scientific research. The University of Leipzig has grown to 14 departments and more than 150 research institutes. It has 29668 registered students (winter semester 2006). It is the largest university in Leipzig, the second largest university in Saxony. Famous alumni include Leibniz, Goethe, Nietzsche, historian Rank, Jean Paul, etc. In 1879, German physiologist Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychological laboratory when he was professor of philosophy at the University of Leipzig, marking the beginning of modern psychology.
