When World War II broke out, Chiang Kai-shek hired him as the chief of staff of the Chinese army and ordered him to command the Chinese 5th and 6th Corps in Burma. Defeated by the Japanese in 1942, he led the remnants to retreat to India. During the war, he commanded all US troops in China, Burma and India. In early 1945, the Ledo Highway, an Allied supply road connecting the Burma Road, was renamed the Stilwell Highway. He was later appointed commander of the US 10th Army in the Pacific theater and accepted the surrender of more than 100,000 Japanese troops in the Ryukyu Islands in August 1945.
