Jiang Zemin was born on August 17, 1926, in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province. Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary of the Central Committee, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, President of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. He participated in the student movement led by the underground party in 1943. He joined the Communist Party of China in April 1946. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1947. After the liberation of Shanghai, he served successively as deputy engineer, chief of the public works section and director of the power workshop, secretary of the party branch of the factory, and first deputy director of the Shanghai Yimin Food Factory, first deputy director of the Shanghai Soap Factory, and chief of the Electrical Professional Section of the Shanghai Second Design Branch of the First Machinery Department. In 1955, he went to the Stalin Automobile Factory in Moscow, the Soviet Union for internship. After returning to China in 1956, he served as deputy director of the Power Department, deputy chief power engineer, and director of the Power Branch of Changchun No. 1 Automobile Factory. After 1962, he served as deputy director of the Shanghai Electrical Engineering Research Institute of the First Machinery Department, director and acting party secretary of the Wuhan Thermal Machinery Research Institute of the First Machinery Department, and deputy director and director of the Foreign Affairs Bureau of the First Machinery Department. After 1980, he served as deputy director, secretary-general and member of the Party Leadership Group of the State Import and Export Administration Commission and the State Foreign Investment Administration Commission. After 1982, he served as first deputy minister, deputy secretary of the Party Leadership Group, minister and secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Ministry of Electronics Industry. After 1985, he served as the mayor of Shanghai, deputy secretary and secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China. In September 1982, he was elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China at the 12th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. In November 1987, he was elected as a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China at the First Plenary Session of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In June 1989, he was elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In March 1990, he was elected as the Chairperson of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China at the Third Session of the Seventh National People's Congress.
