September 29, 1991 Haitian military coup
On this day, 34 years ago, September 29, 1991 (August 22, 1991 in the lunar calendar), Haiti military coup d'état. Haiti is one of the poorest and most politically unstable countries in Latin America. In 1986, the people of Haiti overthrew the Duvalier dictatorship. Later, the soldiers staged several coups and took over the power. In December 1990, Haiti held its first democratic election, and Father Aristide was elected president with an absolute majority. After taking office, Aristide began to restructure the army, removing officers who opposed the democratic process, and abolishing the system of military officials serving as government ministers. These measures aroused strong dissatisfaction among military personnel. In January 1991, soldiers, instigated by Duvalier's cronies, launched an attempted coup. On September 29, soldiers launched another coup under the leadership of the Interim Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Cedras. The next day, the coup forces captured the presidential palace and arrested President Aristide. On October 1, Aristide went into exile in Venezuela after intervention from the United States and France. On October 7, coup forces surrounded the parliament building, forcing it to remove all members of the original cabinet and appointed Supreme Court Justice Neret as interim president and Cedras as commander of the armed forces. The military coup was condemned by the international community, which unanimously demanded the restoration of Aristide's presidential power, and the coup authorities were in trouble.
