On October 25, 1995, a group of Palestinian police entered the West Bank city of Jenin this afternoon, marking the beginning of a new era of full self-government for Palestinians in the West Bank. According to the agreement on expanding Palestinian self-rule signed by Palestine and Israel in Washington on September 28, Israel will withdraw from seven cities in the West Bank by the end of March 1996. Jenin was the first city evacuated by the Israeli army. Five Palestinian police officers arrived in Jenin today from Jericho, the West Bank city where self-rule was first established, and joined Israeli personnel at the Palestinian-Israeli Regional Coordination Office at the entrance of the city.
