Breaking-News >> TodayHistory October 21, 1994 The Han River Bridge in Seoul collapsed
Thirty-one years ago today, on October 21, 1994 (September 17, 1994 in the lunar calendar), the Hanjiang Bridge in Seoul collapsed. At about 7: 40 a.m. on October 21, 1994, the Holy Water Bridge connecting the north and south banks of the Han River was already busy with traffic. Due to the gloomy weather, most vehicles are driving at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour with their lights on. Suddenly, with a loud noise, a 48-meter-long bridge slab collapsed into the river from the middle section of the bridge, and a bus and a dozen cars driving on the bridge fell under the bridge more than 20 meters high. The bus was thrown beyond recognition, four wheels upside down, a minivan was thrown on the falling bridge slab, and the rest of the vehicles fell into the river. Most of the passengers on the bus are workers and students who are in a hurry to go to work and school, and there are more than 10 policemen sitting in the minivan. It was Korean Police Day, and they suffered this tragic disaster on their way to their destination to attend the celebration meeting. Because the minivan didn't fall into the water, most people were slightly injured. After the accident, the police in the minivan managed to get out of the car, endured the pain and got off the bus first to rescue the wounded in the bus. Their selfless sacrifice spirit left a deep impression on people. After the accident, Seoul authorities and troops dispatched more than 20 helicopters and salvage vessels for rescue. Relevant parties also transferred divers to salvage the drowning people. As of press time, 32 bodies have been recovered and about 20 people have been injured. After learning the situation, President Jin Yongsan said that it was simply unbelievable. He sadly expressed his condolences to the victims, and instructed that the cause of the accident must be found out and held accountable. This afternoon, the mayor of Seoul has been dismissed. The South Korean Prime Minister also apologized to the people for the accident and submitted his resignation to the president. Holy Water Bridge is a steel structure bridge completed in October 1979, with a width of 19.5 meters and a length of about 2,000 meters. Over the past ten years, the number of vehicles in Seoul has increased dramatically. At present, the number of vehicles in the city is close to 2 million. The daily traffic volume of Holy Water Bridge is as high as 105,000 vehicles. In recent years, public opinion from all walks of life has pointed out that 13 of the 16 bridges on the Han River have hidden dangers of large-scale accidents, but the relevant departments have denied it, and even the mayor of Seoul thinks there is no major problem. In view of the hidden dangers of other bridges in Seoul, the government has ordered an emergency inspection and taken practical measures to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
