May 18, 1996 President Karadzic of Bosnia and Herzegovina resigned
Twenty-nine years ago today, on May 18, 1996 (April 2, 1996 lunar calendar), President Karadzic of Bosnia and Herzegovina resigned. Vice President Biljana Plashivc replaced Karadzic. On May 18, 1996, under internal and external pressure, President Karadzic of the Republic of Serbia of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced his decision to resign as president in a speech to the public on May 18, 1996, and was replaced by Vice President Biljana Plashivc. The latter is a staunch supporter of Karadzic, a recognized hard-liner, known as the "Iron Lady" of the Bosnian Serbs. Whether this change in the Serb leadership heralds Karadzic's withdrawal from the stage of history has attracted much debate in the international community.
