27 years ago today, on December 19, 1998 (November 1, 1998 in the lunar calendar), Mr. Qian Zhongshu, a scholar and writer, passed away. On December 19, 1998, Mr. Qian Zhongshu, a famous scholar and writer, passed away in Beijing at the age of 88. Mr. Qian was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu in 1910. He graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages of Tsinghua University in 1933. In 1935, he went to Oxford University to study and obtained a B. Litt. (Oxon) degree. Later, he went to the University of Paris to study French literature. After returning to China, he served as a professor of the Department of Foreign Languages of Kunming Southwest United University, the head of the English Department of the National Normal University, a professor of the Department of Foreign Languages of Jinan University in Shanghai, and the general editor of the Foreign Languages Department of the Central Library. After liberation, he served as a professor of the Department of Foreign Languages of Tsinghua University. In 1953, he was transferred to the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a researcher of the Institute of Literature and a member of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences. In the new era, he also served as a researcher of the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and a special consultant of the Academy. He also served as a member of the Sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a standing member of the Seventh and Eighth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Mr. Qian is erudite and versatile, and is fluent in foreign languages. He has studied Chinese and Western languages. He has made outstanding achievements in both literary creation and academic research. His works published before liberation include a collection of essays "Written on the Edge of Life", "China in English in English in the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries of English Literature", a collection of short stories "Man-Beast Among them, "Besieged City" has unique achievements and has been translated into many languages and published abroad. "Tan Yilu" integrates Chinese and Western studies, with incisive and unique insights. After liberation, Mr. Qian published "Selected Poems of the Song Dynasty", "Pipe Cone" in five volumes, "Seven Drops Collection", "Poems of Huai Ju Cun" and so on. Mr. Qian also participated in the translation of "Selected Works of Mao Zedong" in foreign languages. Presided over the compilation of the Tang and Song Dynasties of "History of Chinese Literature". His "Selected Poems of the Song Dynasty" has excellent insights in both poetry selection and annotation, and also made a precise exposition of some regular problems in Chinese and foreign poetics. "Guan Cone" is an academic masterpiece that discusses "Zhouyi Justice", "Mao Poetry Justice", "Zuo Zhuan Justice", "Historical Notes", "Lao Zi Wang Bi Notes", "Liezi Zhang Zhan Biography", "Jiao's Yi Lin", "Chu Ci Hong Xingzu Biography", "Taiping Guangji", "All the ancient three generations of Qin, Han and Three Kingdoms and Six Dynasties". It is a masterpiece accumulated by decades of academic research and has won the first National Book Award. Mr. Qian's scholarly characteristics are the methods of penetrating the mutual views of China, the West, ancient and modern, integrating a variety of subject knowledge, probing into the subtleties, and hooking Xuan abstracts, which have become their own in contemporary academic circles. Because of its various achievements, he is known as a cultural master. Over the past 60 years, Mr. Qian Zhongshu has been dedicated to humanities and social science research, indifferent to fame and fortune, willing to be lonely, diligent in research, and well-known at home and abroad. He has made outstanding contributions to the country and the nation, and has cultivated several generations of scholars. He is a valuable asset of China.
