151 years ago today, October 21, 1874 (September 12, 1874 lunar calendar), the patriotic overseas Chinese Chen Ka Kee's birthday. On October 21, 1874, Chen Ka Kee was born in Fujian Province, Tong'an County, Jimei Town, an ordinary merchant family. In his early years, he went to Nanyang to run industry and commerce, successively opened more than 30 factories, more than 100 stores, cultivated more than 10,000 acres of rubber and pineapple plantations, and employed tens of thousands of employees. It can be said that his family is rich. But living overseas, he never forgot about his motherland. As early as his youth, Chen Ka Kee saw with his own eyes the corruption of the Qing government and the crisis of the country, so he was determined to dedicate himself to serving the country and saving the people from fire and water. In 1910, he joined the Tongmeng Association, cut off his long braids, and immersed himself in the wave of the Xinhai Revolution. He raised more than 200,000 yuan for Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary activities. After the failure of the 1911 Revolution, China was still not free from imperialist aggression. Tan Kah Kee believed that "today's national situation is in danger", "the only thing that sustains it is the education of the people and the hearts of the people who have not died". "Enlighten the wisdom of the people, help the revolution, and help save the country". So he decided to "if you can, you should do your best to develop your studies, so as to fulfill your national duty". From 1913, Tan Kah Kee began to donate funds and promote education in his hometown Jimei, and successively established schools such as primary and secondary schools, normal schools, commerce, aquatic products, navigation, and agriculture. In 1921, he founded Xiamen University, which was the only university in Fujian Province at that time. In the 16 years from 1921 to 1937 alone, he was responsible for the start-up expenses and recurring expenses of Xiamen University of 4 million yuan. Before his death, he had a total of more than 3 million yuan in domestic deposits, all of which he donated to the country for the development of education. A considerable part of the money he donated to education in his life was financed when he was in financial difficulties. When the company he ran had been forced to close down, he still borrowed from the bank to maintain the school's survival. Chen Jiageng's personal life was very frugal. During the Anti-Japanese War and on the eve of liberation, his private house in Jimei Village was damaged twice. But he spent 8 million yuan to repair and add to the Jimei school building, but he never refused to rebuild his private house. In his later years, Tan Ka Kee lived in a very ordinary room upstairs in the office of Jimei School. The desks, chairs and other supplies were very simple and old, and there was no luxury. There was an old sofa in his studio. He insisted on not replacing it with a new one, but only asked to change the seat cushion. He also personally found a small wooden board and placed it on the armrest when needed. As a movable writing board, he often wrote on this wooden board in his later years. In 1950, Xiamen University began to expand. Chen Ka Kee often went to Xiamen University to learn about and guide work. There, he ate the same meals as the staff. Even when the central leadership comrades arrived, he did not hold a Chinese feast, but only prepared local dishes such as "fried rice noodles" to entertain guests. Tan Ka Kee was the first overseas Chinese to combine political, economic, social and cultural activities. Mao Zedong once praised him as "the flag of overseas Chinese and the glory of the nation." Mr. Tan Ka Kee died in Beijing on August 12, 1961. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/15xr.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.27-13:48] 访问:81
