On June 23, 1947, the United States passed the Taft Hartley Act
78 years ago today, on June 23, 1947 (May 5, 1947 in the lunar calendar), the United States promulgated the Taft Hartley Act. After the end of World War II by "Mr. Republican" Robert Taft, the American working class launched a large-scale mass strike movement in order to raise wages and improve welfare benefits. The upsurge of the labor movement caused fear and unease among the ruling group in the United States. In order to suppress and weaken the labor movement, on June 23, 1947 the US Congress passed the "Labor Relations Act of 1947". It was proposed by Senator Robert Taft and Representative Fred Hartley, hence the name. The law is a typical anti-labor legislation in American history. It restricts workers' right to join unions, forbids unions from requiring workers in the same factory to join the same union; prohibits collective bargaining among workers in the same industry nationwide; prohibits Communist Party members from holding union leadership positions; unions must issue a notice before going on strike, and there is a 60-day "cooling off period" pending government investigation; the court has the power to order a strike ban; and the original Wagner Act on union issues is declared invalid. After the law was passed, there was a strong wave of protest among the workers and the masses in the United States.
