Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On November 20, 1961, Algeria patriots won the hunger strike against France
Sixty-four years ago today, on November 20, 1961 (October 13, 1961 lunar calendar), Algerian patriots won a hunger strike against the law. On the evening of November 20, 1961, Benbela, Boudiaf, Deputy Prime Minister of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Algeria, and three other ministers, together with more than 30,000 other Algerian patriots detained in France and Algeria, stopped the hunger strike after a nineteen-day hunger strike. This hunger strike was a huge victory. The French authorities were forced to agree to treat Algerian patriots imprisoned in all prisons and concentration camps in France and Algeria as political prisoners. The French authorities also agreed that such political treatment would be guaranteed by the International Committee of the Red Cross. Speaking in Tunis on Tuesday about the suspension of the hunger strike by Mr. Ben-Bella and the other five ministers, Mr. Yazid, the minister of propaganda of the Algerian interim government, said the government paid tribute to the brave soldiers. "The cessation of the hunger strike by the five members of the provisional government of the Republic of Algeria, like the cessation of the hunger strike by the imprisoned fighters in France, is the result of negotiations with the French government, in which our five colleagues participated." The five Algerian ministers, including Mr. Ben-Bella, have been transferred to a "sanatorium" near Paris, the French authorities announced. "The French authorities remain responsible for the guarding and management of this house [the sanatorium]," the French Justice Ministry said on the 20th.
