89 years ago today, on May 18, 1936 (March 28, 1936), the Western Expedition of the Red Army began. The Western Expedition Red Army sounded the marching number. On May 18, 1936, the 1st, 15th and 81st divisions of the Red Army formed a Western field army to crush Chiang Kai-shek's siege of the Shaanxi-Gansu base area and launch an attack on the Gan-Ning front line. On May 18, the Northwest Revolutionary Military Committee issued an order for the Western Expedition. On the 19th, the Western Expedition Army advanced westward in two ways, left and right, under the command of Peng Dehuai. The Red Army entered the Longdong area through Wuqi Town. The Red 15th Army crossed the Great Wall through Ansai and Jingbian. By the end of July, more than 2,000 people from Ma Hongbin and Ma Hongkui had been captured, more than 500 horses had been captured, and a base area of more than 200 kilometers had been opened up. The victory of this western expedition made the Red Army think of underestimating the enemy, so that the large-scale western expedition of the Red Fourth Front Army caused catastrophic losses.
